αArchive Support ∩
Once a group of files are tagged, you may export a tag list to a disk
file "CdirZip.Lst" using the Tag box on the pulldown menu. You may
either create a new list or append to an existing list. This list can be
used by third-party programs for group file processing.
Using the Zip box on the pulldown menu, a list file is created as above
and control is passed to one of several popular archiving utilities. We
currently support the following archiver programs. You can obtain these
archive programs from most BBS systems or shareware vendors:
Archiver Program File Extension Author / Owner
Arc .Arc System Enhancement Associates
Arj .Arj Robert K. Jung
Lha .Lzh Haruyasu Yoshizaki
Pak .Pak NoGate Consulting
PKzip PKunzip .Zip PkWare
Zoo .Zoo Rahul Dhesi
Archive Viewing
A left click or <ENTER> on an Arc, Arj, Lzh, Pak, Zip, or Zoo entry will
pop up the eXec Pulldown box, Archive Manager category.
α02 ∩
αColor Selection ∩
Some directory programs allow user defined color setup for different
file extensions. The drawback here is that for a large system it is not
practical to assign colors to hundreds of different file extensions.
This method also fails when you use other sort modes.
Color coding in Maestro is accomplished automatically and is unique in
that no time consuming setup is necessary. It is important to note that
our color technique works in all sort options.
We use a unique proprietary process which allows Ega and Vga users to
select from a set of 9 alternate color palettes while retaining
compatability with our color-coding scheme. You may toggle them using
"<" or ">" keys,, or via the pulldown menu "Colr" category. You may also
store a switch in the configuration to automatically come up in one of
these palettes.
VGA users may also select GrayScale Mode. This mode converts colors to a
corresponding shade of gray.

αCommand Line Switches ∩
Command line switches can be added using the forward slash (/)
character. This character is needed only once by the parse routine. A
space MUST separate the command line switches from the Filespec.
Filespec is determined by the absence of the "/" character or by
inclusion of a backslash "\" character. Unlike many other programs,
there are no specific requirements for the order of switches or
filespec. If a conflict arises, the rightmost switch will take
precedence. For example using "/ENS" will sort by S(Size) and the E(Ext)
and N(Name ) are ignored.
Switches are checked first for a 25-66 row setting and the remaining
characters are then processed separately to avoid ambiguities. If you
include a column number override, it must follow the row number. Upper
and lower case can be freely mixed.
Absence of a Filespec will default to the current directory and all
files (*.*).
The following are examples of valid command lines:
Command Line Sort FileSpec Rows Cols
----------------- ------ -------- ---- ----
MAESTRO /N331 \Db NAME \Db\*.* 33 1
Maestro /B \ BYPASS \*.*
MAESTRO A: /e EXT A:\*.*
α04 ∩
αConfiguration ∩
Permanent configuration switches may be entered and internally saved via
the pulldown menu 'Misc' category. These are the same switches that
could be used on the command line following a forward slash '/'.
Switches entered on the command line will override the internally stored
switches. It is not necessary to supply the '/' character when setting
the configuration.
α05 ∩
αMaestree (Maestro Tree) ∩
A color-coded, multi-column, sorted graphical tree of directories is
available if you have run the Maestree utility. This utility should be
run prior to running Maestro and should be rerun each time changes are
made in the directory structure. If directory changes are infrequent
run Maestree only after changes are made. Directory changes implemented
while in Maestro will automatically update the graphical tree.
OLE $Maestro.Bin,300,25
Maestree will assume the current drive if not otherwise specified.
Note: Maestree can handle multiple partitions or drives, The syntax is
"Maestree D" where D is the drive letter to build the tree for. For
example:
Maestree (scans default drive)
Maestree CD (scans drive C & D)
Maestree D (scans drive D)
Note: Adding Maestree to your Autoexec.Bat file is perhaps the easiest
way to ensure an accurate and up to date graphical tree and directory
size totals each time the system is booted.
The following functions are performed by Maestree:
1. Scan disk for names of all directories.
2. Compute filesize totals of all files within each subdirectory.
3. Calculate disk space used.
Note: In computing the totals, we merge the totals from all underlying
subdirectories. This way you get a true picture of how much each
directory holds. This is handy when you want to know how much disk space
you will reclaim by deleting a particular directory and all it's
underlying subdirectories.
3. Get date and time that each subdirectory was created.
4. Sort the entries alphabetically by name, preserving the subdirectory
levels.
5. Construct a single column graphical tree. This will be split to make
a multi-column tree by both the Maestro and Xcd programs.
6. Write the data to file $Maestro.Tre on the root directory of the
specified drive. This enables Maestro and Xcd to load a prebuilt
graphical tree without having to scan the hard disk every time it is
loaded.
α06 ∩
αDate Format ∩
Date formatting is determined by the current date format set at the DOS
level. If Maestro cannot determine your date code or if you have
installed DOS with NO country support, it will default to the U.S.date
format (mm-dd-yyyy). Consult your DOS manual for information on
setting up country codes and code pages if you want to change this. A
typical entry in your Config.sys file for Portugal (Country 351, Code
Page 860) might be:
Country = 351, 860, C:\DOS\Country.Sys
Available Date Formats are:
mm-dd-yy mm-dd-yyyy U.S.
dd-mm-yy dd-mm-yyyy Europe,Latin America
yy-mm-dd yyyy-mm-dd Japan
Day ### yy ### Day of Year from Jan 01 *
* This corresponds to the day number on U.S. Government
calendars.
You may change the format by:
1. Use the 'I' Hotkey or use Date on the pulldown menu.
2. Lock a date format using Misc, Config via the pulldown
menu.
α07 ∩
αDescription ∩
Maestro is a DOS File Manager with ten color coded sort modes requiring
NO setup. Ten prebuilt color schemes. Display 372 files ON-SCREEN with
our Vga 66 row mode. Scrollable virtual window. Auto-switch & HotKey
1,2,4,6,8 Columns; 25,26,28,30,33, 36,40,44,50,57, 66 rows on the fly.
Graphical color-coded multicolumn tree with directory size totals saved
to disk. Navigate directories 3 ways. Mouse support, pulldown menus,
tag & wildcard DOS file utilities, sound effects, link to list/edit/arc
utilities, launch using NO memory overhead. Windows/Network aware,
archive support, foreign language support, 4 date and 2 time formats,
zoom mode, export tag list. List catalog, create, freshen, and update
archived files and more.
1. A graphical tree to disk, along with the file size totals, date,
time, and slack (wasted space) percentage. It loads FAST without
requiring a complete disk scan evey time you load Maestro .
2. If you are using a VGA or EGA monitor, Maestro will automatically
try to fit all your files on one screen. We support 25-66 (6-16 point)
rows. Automatic selection of Columns/Rows on the fly. We determine the
best display mode for your monitor using the file count and current sort
mode. You can even set the maximum rows to less than 66 if you so
desire. Of course you can hot toggle the rows/columns manually too.
3. Supports ten sort modes (10 ascending, 10 descending). Available
modes are Attribute, Bypass (DOS order), Date, Extension, Tag, Month,
Name, Size, Time, and Day. All sorts are lightning fast (assembler
speed). And best of all the files are color coded no matter what sort
mode your in! Unique features are our color selection process which
requires NO setup, and our Tag sort which nicely groups your files
together before you process them.
4. Maestro querys DOS for Country Code and Date/Time formatting
information and starts up in the corresponding language and format. The
current date can be displayed in English, French, German,Italian,
Japanese, Portuguese, or Spanish. You can even cycle through the 7
languages for fun. You may also cycle between 3 date formats or 2 time
formats.
5. The utilities work in three modes:
A. Single files.
B. Tagged files. (You can tag/untag with wildcards too!)
C. Wildcards.
Supports delete, move, copy, touch date, and attribute change. Maestro
will archive, freshen, or update groups of files via ARC, ARJ, LZH, PAK,
ZIP, or ZOO. You may also export a listfile of tagged filenames for
external use.
6. Zoom mode ("Z" hotkey) expands the HighLited entry 5 times using a
graphics character font when your in a mode greater than or equal to 25
rows.

αGeneral ∩
File utilities are handled via a pop-up dialog box. Certain assumed
values are automatically filled in and the remaining values may be
edited. Error checking and some preprocessing is performed on the fly to
help prevent mistyped entries. The dialog box displays the number of
files tagged or the number of files matching the user specification.
When editing is completed, press the F10 to proceed. You will be given a
final chance to proceed.
Success/fail counts and verbose error messages are displayed as the
files are processed.
Delete sets the DOS directory entry leading character to 229 decimal
(Hex E5). You may recover these files using third-party utilities
providing the space occupied by these files has not been reallocated by
DOS. If you accidentally delete some files, attempt recovery before you
Copy files or execute any programs that may otherwise reallocate disk
space. Smart Delete will move files to the \TrashCan directory. If this
directory does not already exist, it will automatically be created .
Move does not physically copy the files. It actually changes the links
to that of the target directory. Thus it avoids the overhead associated
with copying the files to the target directory and then deleting the
source files. It is also considered much safer since there is no danger
of accidentally deleting the source file. Move across disks are not
allowed (such as C to A).
Copy will copy the tagged source files to the destination (target)
directory. The source files are not deleted. Smart copy will copy files
ONLY if newer or not existing on the target directory. Note: Both copy
functions honor the global Overwrite warning flag which can be set
permanently via Config or via Pulldown menu for the session. This will
prompt the user if a destination file of the same name already exists.
Touch date will update all tagged files to a user specified or current
date and time. A pop-up edit window will display the current date and
time. You may edit these values. The values are checked on the fly so
that they remain within valid boundaries. The Tab or Down-arrow key
cycles forward while a Shift-Tab or Up-Arrow cycles reverse. Press the
F10 key when done to accept the values.
Wildcard utilities perform the same functions as above except that
operations are performed only on the current display and only with those
file(s) matching a user defined"Wildcard" file specification. This is
any legitimate filename with any combination of * or ? characters.
Refer to your DOS manual for detailed use of wildcards.
Note: You may abort a tagged or wildcard process even after it has
started executing by pressing the ESCape key.
α14 ∩
αFileSpec ∩
Pressing HotKey F2 will allow input of a new path specification. This is
particularly useful when you want to use a wildcard specification other
than the default value of "*.*".
Note: Clicking on the filespec located at the top left of the screen
will reload the directory. This allows you to swap diskettes or get rid
of tags and refresh the screen quickly.
Filespec is translated in the following manner:
1. A: is translated to A:\*.*
2. bc* is translated to bc*.*
When a path is specified but no File specification, the program assumes
*.* as the default. When no path is specified, the default (current)
directory is used.
α15 ∩
αForeign Languages ∩
Language for the date display is determined by the current country code
set at the DOS level. If Maestro cannot determine your country code or
if you have installed DOS with NO country support, Maestro will default
to English. Consult your DOS manual for information on setting up
country codes and code pages for specific languages. A typical entry in
your Config.sys file for Portugal (and Brazil) might be:
Country = 351, 860, C:\DOS\Country.Sys
The following country codes are used to set the language:
Country Code Language
------------ --------
1, 44, 61 English
2,33 French
49 German
39 Italian
81 Japanese
351 Portuguese
3, 34 Spanish
Although the program will automatically select the correct language,
you may select any of the 8 available languages using the following
methods:
1. While in Maestro use the "L" hotkey or select date drom the
pulldown menu.
2. Go to Misc, Config via the pulldown menus. Set the letter for
the appropriate language lock (cefgijps).

αLogging To Drive ∩
Maestro will assume the current drive if it is not specified otherwise.
You may log onto any drive via the pulldown menu "Driv" category. This
is the recommended method as it will load the graphical tree from the
specified drive if one is present. In addition, the current path for
each drive is maintained by Maestro so that you may navigate your system
and return to the proper directory.
α20 ∩
αMouse Support ∩
You must have a MOUSE DRIVER loaded to use the mouse features. This is
usually done by adding Device=Mouse.Sys in your Config.Sys file or
Mouse.Com to your Autoexec.bat file.
Note: Some mouse drivers hide the mouse cursor above line 50 when in our
57 or 66 line modes. We test for this anomaly and take over control of
the mouse cursor display when necessary. If you are experiencing
difficulty, try using a different mouse driver first.
αScrolling ∩
Left click on the scrollbar (if present) arrows will move up or down as
indicated by the arrow. Clicking on the shaded portion will move the
window proportionally to the height of the scrollbar.
Select Subdirectory:
Left double click or <Enter> on a Subdirectory entry on the screen
loads and displays the directory.
Left double click or <Enter> on the ".." entry moves to the next
highest (closest to the root) directory.
Left double click or <Enter> on the "." entry moves immediately to
the root directory.
α21 ∩
αNavigator ∩
There are three methods available for navigating between
directories:
1. Keyboard entry using the F2 HotKey.
2. Pop up the graphical tree with the F3 HotKey. Move to the desired
directory with cursor keys or by clicking the left mouse button.
3. Double click or strike ENTER on a directory entry on the main
screen. In addition, the dot and doubledot entries move to the root and
next higher (closer to the root) directories respectively.

αRestrictions ∩
MAESTRO.EXE must NOT be recompressed with third party compression
utilities since Maestro will be unable to locate internally stored
configuration data. You may however use disk compression utilities such
as SuperStor or Stacker since they are transparent and fully DOS
compatible.
If you invoke a TSR program that takes over screen control, the Maestro
screen may start blinking. Most TSR's, while they save the underlying
screen, do not restore the blink(intensity) status bit when they are
released. In addition, it is quite likely that Maestro's current font
will be overwritten. Most programs ignore this problem. Maestro utilizes
crash recovery logic which will restore the proper intensity bit and
font under these circumstances.
α25 ∩
αRow and Column logic ∩
Several parameters are used to automatically determine the number of
rows and columns to display. In all cases you may at any time press a
hotkey to switch the number of rows (25-66) or columns (1,2,3,4,6, or
8).
The available number of rows depends on what monitor you have. Cga users
only have the 25 row option. These following fonts and corresponding
number of rows are available:
Font Points Cga Rows Ega Rows Vga Rows
----------- -------- -------- --------
16 na 21 25
15 na 23 26
14 na 25 28
13 na 26 30
12 na 29 33
11 na 31 36
10 na 35 40
9 na 38 44
8 25 43 50
7 na 50 57
6 na 58 66
The 8 column mode is not particularly useful since it shows the filename
without the extension. Therefore, it has been excluded from the
automatic selection process.
During the automatic calculation, any ROW switch that was set on the
command line or stored in the configuration will be used as the maximum
number to use. For example, to set a high limit of 50 rows on a Vga
monitor, start Maestro as follows:
Cdir /50
To store this value use "Misc", "Config" from the pulldown menu and add
50 to the row lock item. You must exit and restart Maestro for the value
to take effect.
COLUMN switches set on the command line or stored in the configuration
will be used in lieu of the calculated value. If the current Sort mode
requires fewer columns to display more detail, the number of columns
will be reduced using the following logic:
┌─────────────────────────────┐
│ Sort Mode Columns │
├─────────────────────────────┤
│ Attr 2 │
│ Bypass 6 │
│ Date 3 │
│ Ext 6 │
│ Tag 6 │
│ Month 3 │
│ Name no change │
│ Size 4 │

│ Day 3 │
└─────────────────────────────┘
α26 ∩
αScreen (Rows & Columns) ∩
Maestro determines the highest resolution your monitor will support as
well as the mode you are in when Maestro is called.
Upon exiting the program the monitor is reset to the mode you were in
when the program was called. If Maestro was in a higher resolution
mode, it repaints the directory screen at the calling mode resolution
prior to exit.
The program logic attempts to get all files on one screen with the most
information possible. Just press the desired column HOTKEY if you need
more detail. Presence of a scroll bar to the right of the first column
on the display will indicate if there are files off the screen.
Auto switching uses the file count and current sort mode to determine
the display rows and number of columns. These decisions are overridden
if a switch has been set on the command line.
Hint: If you want to set the maximum number of screen rows just add a
row number between 25 and 66 to the configuration parameters. Be sure to
enter this number before any column specifier. After you store the value
via the pulldown menu "Misc" category (Config) you will have to exit and
reload the program for the new configuration to take effect.
Note: Switches set on the command line override the internally stored
config switches.
α27 ∩
αScrolling ∩
Provision is made for forward and backward scrolling when everything
won't fit on one screen. Up and down arrows scroll a single line
regardless of how many columns are displayed while Page up and Page down
brings in a new screen of files. Home and End keys display the beginning
or end of the file set.
Note that this method of scrolling differs from most other utilities. It
actually scrolls row by row instead of file by file. Maestro works as
though you are working from a list of files which is 80 columns wide.
The screen acts as a window, sliding up and down vertically on the page
similar to a file list utility.
A mouse scroll bar will replace the column 1 divider line to indicate
that there is information not currently displayed on the screen. By
monitoring the scroll bar arrows you can tell if you are at the top,
bottom or elsewhere in the file set. You may click on the scrollbar to
jump to a new area of the list.
Scroll arrow keys also move the HIGHLIGHT (white on black) of the screen
item for those without a mouse. Pressing the <ENTER> key has the same
effect as left clicking on an item with a mouse.
α28 ∩
αSorting ∩
Directory entries are grouped into 3 blocks using the following logic:
BLOCK ROOT directory SubDirectory
1 Volume "." and ".."
2 Subdirectories Subdirectories
3 Files Files
Block 1 is excluded from sorting and will always appear at the
beginning. Blocks 2 and 3 are sorted as separate entities so that they
will remain in their respective group.
All sorts are coded in assembly language for speed. Maestro sorts use
the following fields:
┌────────────────────────────────┐
│ Sort Mode Sort Criteria │
├────────────────────────────────┤
│ Attr Attribute field │
│ Bypass No Sort (as in DOS) │

α29 ∩
αTime Format ∩
Time formatting is determined by the current time format set at the DOS
level. If Maestro cannot determine your time code or if you have
installed DOS with NO country support, it will default to the U.S. time
format (am/pm). Consult your DOS manual for information on setting
up country codes and code pages if you want to change this. A typical
entry in your Config.sys file for Portugal (Country 351, Code Page 860)
might be:
Country = 351, 860, C:\DOS\Country.Sys
Two time modes are supported for the on-screen clock:
1. hh:mm:ss
2. hh:mm:ss am or pm
Two time modes are supported for the file display:
1. hh:mm
2. hhmma or p
Note: Although the seconds are not shown on the main file display, all
date and time sorts do include seconds to ensure correct sorting.
You may change the format by:
1. Use the 'J' Hotkey or use Date on the pulldown menu.
2. Lock a time format using Misc, Config via the pulldown
menu.
α30 ∩
αZoom Mode ∩
The "Z" HotKey will pop up a window which displays the current
highlighted screen entry in large graphics character font. Strike any
key to return to the original screen. The Zoom window is not available
in Ega 21 or 23 row modes.
